Is that burn a result of vaping or from a hot engine bay?

Changing the oil filter on some Subarus is basically playing Operation.

It’s pretty amazing that Subaru could release both the above monstrosity and this:

Filter socket and my longest extension. No way in hell I'm sticking my hand in there unless it's been sitting overnight first.

“
How else do you expect those parts to be lubricated!?!”
“I...I don’t think those are supposed-”
“Look buddy. We don't tell you how to pull teeth. You don't tell us how to build a bike."

I always wear latex gloves, but I already have problems with hand fitment without adding the bulk of mechanic’s gloves. I miss the old land yachts whose engine bays
you could practically stand in.

Why yes I do own a Subaru... but that’s actually from raking leaves all day yesterday

Yet another reason I bought the Kona instead of an XV/Impreza
(video shows a 2.0, but the 1.6t differs only in that the drain and filter access are in a single hole. Note the oblong cutout to simultaneously allow easy access with a socket and ratchet and the drain oil stream to miss the undertray completely. Thanks, Hyundai!)

It should be noted that I also changed the oil in our 1.6 Soul with no ill affects.

I mean, Hyundai and Kia are basically the same company... Closer than Audi and VW in most ways. The 1 .6t Gamma is shared, so it makes sense that the oil change in the Kia is just as well thought out.

Well that’s a horrible location. At least it isn’t surrounded by hot exhaust parts, though.

I don't own a Subaru, which is why I can afford a leaf blower...

Well said.
We never had a leaf blower growing up. Our neighbor did his farmhouse lawn with a silage blower he converted and ran behind his tractor. We did our yard by hand. Now that I’m 2 years into owning my own house I suddenly realized “wait... I don’t actually have to be raking. They make a thing for this’. Next year...

lol yea that’s what I’m taking about. It’s still slightly easier on the 02 because the filter sits at an angle where that is more natural for my hands to remove the filter

Same here, my brother and I always raked growing up. W e’re farm kids so it didn’t seem like much work at the time, but as we grew up we just wanted to get it done. Also when you do get a blower get one of the biggest ones, unless you have a small yard believe me it’s worth it.

having skinny hands, i never had too much trouble with the ring of fire. My least favorite was a porsche with a crossmember right behind the oil pan drain.

Are the engineers in charge of finding the oil filter position the same ones that barely managed to graduate?
I think the software development equivalent is software developers who write printer drivers or scanner software. I have yet to find either that actually works properly. It’s like they couldn’t get a job writing other software, so they got stuck doing that.
The Civic is bad, but not that bad. It’s up behind, on the rear of the block. Every time I change it, it dribbles down an engine mount and onto the exhaust manifold, so that I can enjoy the smell of burning oil for the next day or two.
